Property: Not specified
Service: Water Tank Cleaning, Chlorination & Water System Maintenance
Equipment: Cold Water Storage Tank & Inlet Float Valve

The Problem – Faulty Float Valve Identified During Water Tank Cleaning

Regular cold water storage tank cleaning and chlorination are essential parts of maintaining safe, hygienic water systems in residential and commercial properties.

Over time, cold water storage tanks can accumulate sediment, debris and other contaminants, potentially affecting water quality and creating conditions that encourage bacterial growth.

NT Cloke Pumps & Water attended a property to carry out a scheduled cold water storage tank clean and chlorination, helping maintain the condition and hygiene of the stored water supply.

However, during the visit, our engineers identified an additional problem affecting the tank’s inlet float valve.

The existing valve had become heavily corroded, and a component had snapped, preventing the float valve from operating correctly.

Float valves play an important role in cold water storage systems by controlling the incoming water supply and maintaining the correct water level within the tank.

When these components fail, they can cause several problems, including uncontrolled water filling, incorrect water levels, potential overflow and disruption to the building’s water supply.

Rather than leaving the customer with an unresolved fault, our engineers assessed the damaged component and identified a practical temporary solution.

What We Did – Cold Water Tank Cleaning, Chlorination & Float Valve Repair

Our engineers carried out the scheduled tank cleaning and chlorination while also addressing the unexpected inlet float valve fault discovered during the visit.

The work included:

  • Assessing the condition of the existing cold water storage tank.
  • Carrying out the scheduled tank cleaning to remove accumulated deposits and debris.
  • Completing the required tank chlorination procedure.
  • Inspecting the tank’s inlet float valve and associated components.
  • Identifying significant corrosion and a broken float valve component.
  • Dismantling the affected valve assembly to assess the damage.
  • Carrying out a temporary repair using a stainless-steel bolt.
  • Restoring the operation of the inlet float valve.
  • Providing a quotation for a new ball valve as a permanent replacement.
  • Checking the tank’s water level and returning the system to service.

The temporary repair allowed the existing float valve to operate while arrangements could be made for a permanent replacement.

By identifying and addressing the fault during the scheduled maintenance visit, our engineers helped prevent the customer from being left with an immediate operational problem.

Importantly, the temporary repair was not intended to replace the need for a new valve. A permanent replacement was recommended to provide a reliable long-term solution.

The Result – Clean Water Storage Tank & Float Valve Operation Restored

Following the completion of the cleaning and chlorination works, the cold water storage tank was returned to service.

The temporary repair restored the operation of the inlet float valve, allowing the tank’s water level to function correctly.

The customer also received a quotation for a replacement ball valve, ensuring a permanent solution could be arranged.

The completed maintenance visit delivered:

✅ Cold Water Storage Tank Cleaned
✅ Tank Chlorination Completed
✅ Corroded Float Valve Component Identified
✅ Broken Valve Assembly Assessed
✅ Temporary Stainless-Steel Bolt Repair Completed
✅ Inlet Float Valve Operation Restored
✅ Replacement Ball Valve Quoted
✅ Tank Water Level Checked
✅ Cold Water Storage System Returned to Service

The work demonstrates how routine water tank maintenance can uncover developing mechanical faults that might otherwise go unnoticed until they cause a more significant problem.

By combining scheduled cleaning and chlorination with practical fault identification and repair, NT Cloke Pumps & Water helped maintain the condition and continued operation of the customer’s water storage system.

Added Value – Preventative Water Tank Maintenance & Fault Identification

Cold water storage tank cleaning is about more than simply removing dirt and debris.

It also provides an opportunity to inspect important components within the wider water storage system.

Float valves, inlet connections, overflow arrangements and associated pipework can all deteriorate over time, particularly where components are exposed to moisture and prolonged use.

A corroded or damaged float valve may continue operating for some time before eventually failing, potentially causing uncontrolled filling, water loss or interruptions to the water supply.

Identifying these issues during planned maintenance allows property owners and facilities managers to arrange repairs before they develop into more disruptive failures.

At NT Cloke Pumps & Water, our engineers take a practical approach to cold water storage tank cleaning, chlorination, float valve repairs and water system maintenance.

Our services include:

  • Cold Water Storage Tank Cleaning: Removing accumulated sediment, debris and deposits from water storage tanks.
  • Tank Chlorination: Disinfecting water storage systems as part of planned water hygiene maintenance.
  • Float Valve Repairs & Replacement: Identifying and addressing faults affecting water level control.
  • Cold Water Storage Tank Inspections: Assessing tank condition and identifying potential maintenance requirements.
  • Water System Maintenance: Supporting the continued operation of cold water storage and distribution systems.
  • Planned Preventative Maintenance: Identifying developing faults before they result in unexpected system failures.

We work with facilities managers, landlords, managing agents and commercial property owners throughout the Midlands and across the UK.

Our engineers understand the importance of maintaining reliable water systems while helping customers avoid unnecessary disruption and unexpected repair costs.
