Rainwater Harvesting System Cleaning & Maintenance at a Liverpool Industrial Factory

Rainwater Harvesting Maintenance Liverpool | NT Cloke

Location: Liverpool, Merseyside
Sector: Industrial / Manufacturing
Service: Rainwater Harvesting System Maintenance & Tank Cleaning
Equipment: Rainwater Harvesting Tank & Booster Pump System

Project Overview

NT Cloke Pumps & Water recently completed a rainwater harvesting system maintenance project at an industrial factory in Liverpool.

The project involved cleaning and chlorinating the rainwater storage tank, removing accumulated sediment and deposits, and checking the associated booster pump equipment.

Rainwater harvesting systems provide an effective way for industrial and commercial buildings to collect and reuse rainwater for suitable non-potable applications. However, regular maintenance is essential to help keep these systems operating efficiently.

Our engineers attended the Liverpool facility to carry out the necessary cleaning and maintenance works, improving the condition of the storage tank and supporting the continued operation of the rainwater harvesting system.

The Challenge

Sediment and Contamination Build-Up Within the Rainwater Harvesting System

Rainwater harvesting systems naturally collect water from external surfaces, which can introduce dirt, organic matter, sediment and other debris into the storage system.

Over time, these materials can accumulate inside storage tanks, potentially affecting water quality and the performance of associated pumping equipment.

At this industrial facility in Liverpool, significant deposits and contamination-related build-up were visible within the rainwater harvesting tank.

The photographs showed considerable staining along the internal tank walls, with accumulated sediment surrounding the pumping equipment and float mechanisms.

Without appropriate maintenance, these conditions can contribute to blocked components, reduced pumping efficiency and premature wear.

The objective was to thoroughly clean the tank, remove accumulated deposits and complete the required maintenance to support reliable system operation.

The Solution

Rainwater Tank Cleaning, Chlorination & Booster Equipment Checks

Our engineers carried out a comprehensive cleaning and maintenance programme, focusing on the condition of the storage tank and associated booster equipment.

The works included:

✅ System Drain Down – Draining the rainwater storage tank to provide access for cleaning.

✅ Tank Cleaning – Thoroughly cleaning the internal surfaces to remove accumulated dirt, staining and deposits.

✅ Sediment Removal – Removing build-up from the tank floor and surrounding equipment.

✅ Tank Chlorination – Completing chlorination as part of the maintenance programme.

✅ Booster Equipment Checks – Checking the associated pumping equipment and system components.

✅ System Return to Service – Returning the rainwater harvesting system to operation following completion of the works.

The cleaning process made a significant visible difference, with previously heavily stained surfaces left considerably cleaner.

The Result

A Cleaner, Better-Maintained Rainwater Harvesting System

Following completion of the maintenance works, the rainwater harvesting system was returned to service.

The before-and-after photographs demonstrate the improvement achieved, particularly around the pumping equipment and internal tank surfaces.

Removing accumulated sediment and deposits helps reduce the likelihood of debris affecting system components, while regular maintenance supports the long-term performance of rainwater harvesting installations.

Key benefits of the completed works included:

  • Removal of accumulated sediment and deposits.
  • Improved cleanliness of the rainwater storage tank.
  • Chlorination completed as part of the maintenance works.
  • Booster pump equipment checked.
  • Reduced potential for debris-related equipment problems.
  • Improved overall condition of the system.
  • Rainwater harvesting system returned to service.

The project highlights the importance of maintaining rainwater harvesting equipment, particularly within busy industrial environments where reliable building services are essential.

Why Regular Rainwater Harvesting System Maintenance Matters

Rainwater harvesting systems are increasingly used in commercial and industrial buildings to reduce reliance on mains water supplies for suitable applications.

However, these systems require ongoing inspection and maintenance to remain effective.

Rainwater storage tanks can accumulate sediment, organic matter and other contaminants, while pumps, filters and float switches may become affected by debris or general wear.

Regular servicing can help identify developing problems before they result in equipment failure or interruptions to the water supply.

Routine rainwater harvesting system maintenance may include:

  • Inspection and cleaning of rainwater storage tanks.
  • Removal of sediment and accumulated debris.
  • Inspection of booster pumps and associated equipment.
  • Checking float switches and water level controls.
  • Inspection of pipework and connections.
  • Cleaning or replacement of filters where required.
  • Assessment of overall system performance.

For facilities managers and industrial property owners, planned maintenance can help reduce unexpected breakdowns and extend the working life of rainwater harvesting equipment.
