Commercial Booster Set Replacement – Bespoke Grundfos Variable-Speed Upgrade
Out-of-Hours Booster Set Installation at a Busy Service Station
When a commercial booster set begins to fail, simply keeping the remaining equipment running isn’t always a sustainable solution.
NT Cloke Pumps & Water recently completed a commercial booster set replacement at a busy service station, replacing an ageing fixed-speed system with a bespoke Grundfos variable-speed booster set.
With the existing system operating on just one pump, reliability had become a concern and the ageing fixed-speed arrangement was no longer providing the most efficient solution for the site’s water demands.
Because the service station needed to remain operational, our engineers planned and completed the booster set replacement out of hours, minimising disruption while delivering a substantial upgrade to the site’s water boosting system.
The Problem – An Ageing Fixed-Speed Booster Set
The existing booster set had reached the point where only one of its pumps remained operational.
This significantly reduced the resilience of the system.
In a multi-pump booster set, having multiple operational pumps allows demand to be shared between the available equipment and provides greater system resilience.
With the service station relying on a single remaining pump, any further failure could have resulted in significant disruption to the site’s water supply.
The existing system also used older fixed-speed technology.
Rather than simply replacing individual components within an ageing installation, a complete booster set upgrade provided an opportunity to improve both reliability and efficiency.
Bespoke Booster Set Designed for the Site
Every commercial property has different water requirements.
Occupancy, peak demand, operating hours and the existing mechanical installation all influence the specification of a replacement booster set.
Our engineers therefore designed a bespoke booster solution around the requirements of the service station rather than approaching the project as a straightforward like-for-like replacement.
A new Grundfos variable-speed booster set was selected to provide the required water pressure while offering improved control and energy efficiency.
Upgrading from Fixed-Speed to Variable-Speed Pumps
One of the biggest improvements was the move from the ageing fixed-speed arrangement to modern variable-speed pump technology.
Variable-speed booster pumps can adjust their operation in response to changes in water demand.
Instead of pumps simply operating at full speed whenever they are required, the system can regulate pump performance to maintain the required pressure more efficiently.
For a busy commercial property where water demand can vary considerably throughout the day, this can provide several benefits:
- More consistent water pressure
- Improved energy efficiency
- Reduced unnecessary pump operation
- Lower running costs
- Reduced mechanical stress
- Improved system control
- Greater overall reliability
It provides a much more intelligent approach to water pressure management than the ageing system it replaced.
Out-of-Hours Booster Set Replacement
Replacing a booster set at a busy commercial site requires careful planning.
Interrupting the water supply during normal operating hours could have caused significant disruption to staff, customers and the wider operation of the service station.
Our engineers therefore scheduled the installation outside the site’s normal operating hours.
The existing equipment was isolated and removed before the new bespoke Grundfos booster set was positioned and connected to the site’s existing services.
The associated mechanical and electrical works were completed before the system was thoroughly tested and commissioned.
Works Completed
- Existing fixed-speed booster set assessed
- Replacement system designed around site requirements
- Out-of-hours installation planned
- Ageing booster equipment removed
- Bespoke Grundfos booster set installed
- Variable-speed pump technology introduced
- Mechanical connections completed
- Electrical works completed
- System fully tested and commissioned
- Water services returned to normal operation

The Result – Greater Reliability and Better Efficiency
The completed upgrade has transformed the site’s booster system.
Instead of relying on a single operational pump within an ageing fixed-speed system, the service station now benefits from a modern multi-pump Grundfos booster set capable of responding more efficiently to changing water demand.
The new installation provides:
- Improved system reliability
- Greater resilience
- Consistent water pressure
- Improved energy efficiency
- Reduced unnecessary energy consumption
- Potential reductions in ongoing running costs
- Modern variable-speed control
And because the work was completed out of hours, the upgrade was achieved with minimal disruption to normal site operations.
Bespoke Cloke – Built Around the Building
Not every booster set replacement should be a straightforward like-for-like installation.
Older systems may have been designed around completely different building requirements, technology and energy expectations.
When replacement becomes necessary, it can provide an opportunity to reassess the complete installation and specify equipment better suited to how the building operates today.
At NT Cloke Pumps & Water, we design and install bespoke commercial booster systems around the actual requirements of the property.
From equipment specification and mechanical alterations through to electrical works, installation and commissioning, our engineers can manage the complete project.

Is Your Existing Booster Set Becoming Unreliable?
Repeated pump failures, rising maintenance costs, inconsistent water pressure or an ageing fixed-speed system can all indicate that it may be time to consider an upgrade.
NT Cloke Pumps & Water can assess your existing booster installation and recommend a repair, refurbishment or complete replacement based on the requirements of your building.
Where disruption needs to be kept to an absolute minimum, we can also plan out-of-hours booster set installations around site operations.
